Pescara

January 11, 2012

Pescara is the tourist and shopping capital of Abruzzo. It’s a medium sized, bustling coastal city served by Abruzzo airport, which is located 10 minutes drive from the city centre. Just south of central Italy, Pescara is a lovely mixture of southern and northern Italy.

Pescara is also on the outer edge of the Abruzzo National Park, which is the largest in Italy, and only a one hour drive from the Maiella mountain range, where there are excellent skiing facilities in the winter months.

Pescara is a modern, but an industrial looking city. The river Pescara chops the city in two, on one side the modern city with its two main shopping streets selling many famous Italian designer names and on the other the small but bustling old town with its many bars and restaurants.

The city has recently undergone extensive rejuvenation and many of its squares and parks have now been given a serious facelift.

The sea and the beach are the focus of life in the summer months in Pescara.  There are plenty of beach clubs lining the coast and, though not the most beautiful stretch of coastline in Italy, the shallow calm waters are great for children to play in.

The climate is pretty mild all year long and although temperatures in summer reach well into the 30s, a cooling sea breeze stops it from getting unbearably hot. Windows can even be left openmost days during the winter as the temperature seldom falls below zero.  Sounds good?  Yes!
