Pescara’s Gabrielle D’Annunzio

March 10, 2009

Setting aside your hire car for an hour or two and taking a walk around the picturesque town of Pescara could scarcely be more rewarding.  Pescara’s ancient centre, built within the Spanish walls, holds many interesting buildings and monuments, including an impressive library, museum and, most notably, an exquisite neo-classical cathedral, the Cathedral of St Cetteus cathedral.  Possibly the building deserving of most attention, however is a small house by the old city walls – The house of Gabriele D’Annunzio, the famous 19th and 20th century Italian poet, is preserved as a museum to the remarkable man’s memory and career, and sits in the centre of Pescara.

A legendary Italian poet, novelist, dramatist, military hero, and political activist, D’Annunzio combined naturalism, symbolism and eroticism in his writing, and was never far from the headlines in his day.  As you might expect from a son of the remarkable and vibrant town of Pescara, he wasn’t just famous for his writing and his politics. His love affairs, relationship with a world-famous actress, and his heroic adventures during World War I, make this house a fascinating visit, both for fans of Mr D’Annunzio, and newcomers to the legendary figure.

The Pescara Jazz Festival

March 5, 2009

Every summer the picturesque and intriguing little town of Pescara becomes home to one of Europe’s most important and interesting jazz festivals, when this beautiful corner of Italy becomes the musical centre of the world.  Every July since 1969 the streets and venues, both indoor and out, resonate to the sounds of the jazz world’s greatest artists and performers.

Over the years, the Pescara Jazz Festival has played host to some of Jazz’s greatest names, such as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, Charles Mingus, Woody Herman, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, and Wayne Shorter, while more recent acts have included Natalie Cole, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Stan Getz.

And it doesn’t stop there.  If Jazz isn’t necessarily your bag, baby, the Pescara Jazz Festival also welcomes acts with a wider appeal outside of Jazz, and visitors to the lovely town of Pescara will also be able to hear performers tackling the work of people like Burt Bacharach, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and James Taylor. Truly something for everyone.

Beach Life In Pescara

February 7, 2009

Pescara boasts a ten-mile coastline that’s home to gorgeous sandy beaches along the Adriatic coast.  It has become a favourite holiday destination among domestic tourists, along with an increasing number of foreign visitors.

The seafront is where much of the action happens in Pescara.  Stroll along the Viale della Riviera, the long promenade right by the shore, for a taste of life in the locale.  With bars and restaurants strewn about and merchants with their wares, your walk will be long and slow, with every minute offering an enjoyable adventure.  If you’d like a change of scenery, the Old Town offers an alternate prowling ground for vacationers looking for time away from the sea.

Pescara is a popular family holiday destination and, as such, is never as raucous as most other Italian beach getaways.  Don’t think decadence isn’t part of the culture, though.  Summer months sees nightclubs extending their operation outdoors into open-air venues and night owls have enough to keep busy with most every night of the week.  Make sure to drop by at least once to Ex-Gaslini, a warehouse-turned-club in Via Pindario that is fast-shaping up to a hub in the local party scene.

Gabriele D’Annunzio

January 31, 2009

Gabriele D’Annunzio is probably Pescara’s most famous son.  He was a poet, novelist, dramatist and journalist who was always involved in controversy throughout his life – he was a mentor to Mussolini and an avid member of the Italian fascist movement.

His literary works had a huge impact across Europe, and his influence is still seen today.  However, a lot of his work has been affected by his association with his fascist associations.  His most popular poetic work remains as La pioggia nel pineto (The Rain in the Pinewood).

D’Annunzio had three sons with his wife, Maria Hardouin di Gallese, but once again courted controversy in Pescara, by ending the relationship and beginning an affair with an actress called Eleonora Duse.  He also provided Eleonora with parts in his plays.

Remarkably, during World War I he became a fighter pilot and lost an eye during this time.  His ties remained close to Pescara throughout this time, often writing about missing his hometown.  His rank rose to commander and he was highly respected amongst the Italian public at this time.

D’Annunzio died of a stroke at the age of 74 in 1938.  Mussolini gave him a state funeral and he was buried in a wonderful tomb made of white marble in Lake Garda.  He was certainly one of the most striking characters of his day and someone that the Italian public will continue to debate about for many years to come.

Saint Cetteus

January 27, 2009

During the pontificate of Gregory the Great, in the year 590, Saint Cetteus was a bishop in the city of Pescara.  He is now widely known as the Patron Saint of Pescara.

As legend has it, he was a humanitarian who refused to stay as bishop in Amiternum due to the occupation by two Lombards, Alai and Umbolus.  He only returned after Gregory the Great made promises that the two Lombards would be kind to the people of Amiternum.   Due to a dispute about who occupied the city Umbolus incarcerated Alai and ordered that Cetteus be killed.   Cetteus then had a large stone tied around his neck and was thrown off a bridge into the Aterno-Pescara river.   His body was found by fisherman in Pescara, and they buried him in the church that was to be named after him, San Cetteus.

The story of Saint Cetteus is somewhat legendary, but many accounts have pointed to many believing that it could be largely true.  On October 10th of each year, there is a feast held in Pescara to commemorate their famous Saint.
